The transgender roles According to the new orthodoxy, "gender" is a subjective identity and a set of outward behaviors that reflects one's feelings about one's gender role.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender_identity"Gender" is different from "sex" in that one can freely "identify as gender X". Since one is free to identify as X or as Y, one is free to change one's gender role at any time.
But what exactly are those roles? For example, the brothers Andy and Larry Wachowski announced in 2010 and in 2016 that they changed their gender to female and their names to Lana and Lilly. What exactly does it mean that they are now "women"? Other than having a Wikipedia page that calls them "sisters" and not "brothers", what has changed in their assumed roles in society, what do they now do differently other than dress as women and put on make-up?
It appears that not much has changed in their lives. They do not
have to dress up as women or wear any make-up. It is their choice to do so. The Wikipedia page mentions that they are avid gamers and play "Mortal Combat"; their transition to womanhood does not mean that they need to start playing dolls instead. So, what does it mean?
Traditional gender roles are man as provider/protector and woman as childbearer/nurturer. The outward indications of manhood are designed to display the man's ability to provide and protect. A man's big bones and muscles indicate physical strength. An expensive suit and a brand-name watch indicate resourcefulness. The outward indications of womanhood are designed to display the woman's health, ability to bear children and to take care of them. For example, make-up imitates youth (proxy for fertility) and sexual arousal (willingness to copulate). Long, healthy-looking hair indicates that the woman has lived through several years of good nutrition and health. A woman's sweet smile suggests kindness and agreeableness required for childrearing.
If we reject the traditional gender roles as oppressive or outdated, what are the new gender roles? If a man declares a gender transition, what is "she" now expected to do that "he" didn't or couldn't do before?
The answer seems to be: nothing at all. A transgender "woman" is legally free to wear make-up and dresses and high heels and earrings, but so is any man without a transition. The current orthodoxy celebrates freedom from outdated and stereotypical gender roles. So, a woman is no longer required to get married and bear children, and a man is (theoretically) no longer required to be strong and resourceful and provide for a family. The Wachowski brothers do not need to get married or adopt any children in order to be called "sisters".
It appears that the new gender roles is the absence of any gender roles. If we accept this, the whole charade about gender transition will have lost all meaning. You cannot transition from an absence of a defined role to an absence of a defined role.
Hence, the vacuously circular definition of "gender". A person expresses "gender" by behavior that conforms to a chosen gender role. And a gender role is nothing but the expression of "gender".
