Inspired by rumors of an Airbnb ultimatum
In Orwell's famous anti-Utopia, he had Ministry of Truth (which fabricated history), Ministry of Peace (which waged endless wars), and Ministry of Love (which tortured the dissidents). I suggest that, having lived past Orwell's times and seen things he couldn't have seen, we should now consider expanding the list.
One candidate I'd propose is the Ministry of Respect, to deal with the people who show unequal respect to somebody as compared to their respect to somebody else. These unfortunates are to be taken to the Ministry's custody and showered with respect. Those of them who continue to demonstrate disrespect or unequal respect will be given over to the Ministry of Love (to be showered with love). That pretty much sums up our Political Correctness practices, if not exactly as we know them today, then surely as we can expect them to take form in the not-so-distant future.
The end aim of the Miniresp's activities is to make sure that nobody has any notion of the boundary between one's fist and another person's nose.
While we are at it, another obvious candidate is the Ministry of Enlightenment. By the definition, someone is called enlightened if he never had, or no longer has, any idea of the concept of truth, or of the difference between truth and falsehood. The Ministry's duty is to make sure that everyone is enlightened. Than pretty much sums up our present-day school and university education practices. |
