Here’s something to understand about the free speech “debate”. The radical leftists/postmodernists who agitate to interfere with speakers—often, but not always, conservative (because they’re after the true liberal centrists as well)—are opposed to the idea of individual free speech itself; they’re not merely objecting to invited speakers whose viewpoints they oppose. If you believe that the primary hallmark of a person’s identity is their group affiliation and that each individual is, therefore, nothing but a mouthpiece for the power demands of their tribe, so to speak, then the debate that you are engaging in is about whether free speech even exists more than about who is allowed to speak. The radicals on the left don’t believe that individuals have something unique to say, or that reasonable people can discuss controversial issues and come to a peaceful and productive consensus. None of those classic Western ideas, derived from traditional conservative and liberal perspectives alike, are part of the modern ideology that grips so many on today’s campuses.
