завтра увижу и поговорю с Сэром Атьей (и рыцарем) --- великим математиком...
Говорить конечно не о чем, но что же делать....

Dear all,

Please note that next week's talk will take place on Monday (not Tuesday). We will have Sir MICHAEL ATIYAH speaking to us -- winner of the Fields Medal and of the Abel Prize, former President of the Royal Society, and one of the greatest living mathematicians. This event is not to be missed...

As we expect a fair number of people coming to this talk, you would be well advised to *arrive early*, if possible, since the lecture theatre has but a finite capacity.

We are pleased, then, to announce that on Monday of 8th week (29 Nov), we will have a talk by

Sir MICHAEL ATIYAH OM FRS

on

"Newton Polygons and a Theorem of Archimedes".

Abstract:
Archimedes discovered the beautiful theorem that relates the area of a sphere to the area of a cylinder. Newton introduced polygons associated to the exponents in polynomials. I will show how these are related and lead to surprising results including the iso-perimetric inequality which characterizes the circle.

As always, the talk will take place in the Maths Institute, on the
corner of St Giles' and Keble Road. Doors open at 8.00pm. The talk
starts promptly at 8.15pm. Entrance is free for members and £2 for
non-members.

Refreshments will be served afterwards, including squash, coffee, snacks
and of course Jaffa cakes.

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on Tuesday,

Carlo
