Paris' dance of death had dominated the genre in the late Middle-Ages; from 1538 on, the work of Holbein became the ultimate reference. The series of 41 wood engravings was created around 1526 and published 12 years later in Basle. Holbein was not the first to use the woodcut technique instead of the traditional fresco to create a dance of death.
