В средневековье существовала легенда о философе Аристотеле, его ученике Александре Великом и его возлюбленной Филлиде. Аристотель предостерегает Александра, говоря, что физическая любовь к женщине может иметь отрицательные последствия для мужчины. Филлида мстит Аристотелю, пуская в ход хитрость. Она очаровывает его, кладёт на его спину седло, одевает уздечку и садится на него верхом, "тайком" демонстрируя эту сцену Александру, дабы уронить учителя в глазах Александра. Хитрость не удаётся, т.к. Александр не теряет уважения к своему учителю, а, наоборот, соглашается с правильностью его предостережения.

По другим версиям- Филлида, чтобы отомстить Аристотелю, внушила ему любовь к себе и потребовала, как доказательство, чтобы он позволил ей проехать на его спине как на лошади. Свидетелем падения своего учителя был Александр, который учился таким образом не доверять женщинам, против которых даже старые философы были бессильны.
Сюжет этот пользовался особой популярностью у ренессансных художников, особенно в Германии.
