Спасибо всем большое за участие и за правильные и остроумные ответы,- ведь если не знать, как в старину выглядела погремушка, догадаться не так просто. Ручки же у старинных погремушек часто делали из коралла- чтобы кусать и чесать зубки, иногда из перламутра и слоновой кости.

В древнем мире погремушки имели благословляющий ребенка характер, а также использовались для призывания к младенцу защитных сил – духов или ангелов и недопущения темных сил, применялись для изгнания злых духов.
На Руси их делали из глины, закладывая внутрь двух полых половинок глиняные же шарики и затем их соединяя. А еще – из дерева, бересты, лозы. И форма была разная – от округлой до цилиндрической и крестовой. Наполнялись они камешками, горошинами, маковыми головками. И назывались по-разному: шаркунок, грематушка, побрякушка.
