• Relationships: Husband of Marie Anne Gerard Fragonard.
Father of Alexandre-Evariste Fragonard.
Grandfather of Berthe Morisot.
Brother-in-law of Marguerite Gerard.
Studied under Chardin, Francois Boucher and Carle Vanloo.

Biography

Painter and etcher; pupil of Chardin (q.v) then Boucher (q.v.); won the Prix de Rome ('Jeroboam sacrificing to the Idols', 1752), but studied at the Ecole Royale before leaving for the Académie de France in Rome (1756); in 1760, accompanied Saint-Non (q.v.) on his trip across Italy; returned to Paris in 1761; 'received' at the Académie, 1765 ('Coresus et Callirhoe'). Accompanied Bergeret de Grancourt on his journey to Italy, 1773-74; on the wane during the Revolution as his style and subjects seemed too old-fashioned, Fragonard mainly worked in the administration of the arts in the years 1793-1800.
