===========================
From a series of thirty-eight plates making up 'Le Monument du Costume...', a set on French costume at the end of the 18th century, published in 1789.
The first twelve plates, engraved after Freudenberg, had previously been published under the title 'Suite d'Estampes pour servir à l'histoire des Modes et du Costume en France dans le dix-huitième siècle' (1774). Johann Friedrich Esbert, amateur engraver, is said to be at the origin of the project, and the prints bear his initials as the designer.
The following twenty-four plates, engraved after Moreau, had been published in two separate sets of twelve prints each: 'Seconde suite d'Estampes...' (1777) and 'Troisième suite d'Estampes...' (1783) .
When the three sets were published as a whole in 1789, two more plates were added: 'Les Moeurs du temps' and 'L'Heureuse union', both after Freudenberg.
