End of Year Gift Policy - We wish to remind parents at this time of year that the PTO discourages the giving of personal gifts to a teacher or staff member. School Committee policy states "When families, students or others wish to express personal appreciation to a teacher or other staff member, the School Committee urges them to find modes of expression that do not involve personal gifts." Additionally, there are state ethics regulations that prohibit public employees from accepting gifts of substantial value ($50 or more). Appropriate options for expressing gratitude to school personnel include: a gift of nominal value, such as something made by a student; a letter of gratitude to a teacher or staff member; a donation to a school cause or a book through the PTO Gift Book Program*
Я в свое время с удовольствием дарила что-то на память двум очень симпатичным воспительницам у Оси в саду, одна уезжала из штата, другая уходила делать PhD. А еще на дошкольной программе по развитию речи в конце года мамаши собрали преподавателям по корзине со всякими разностями для пикника, один раз за три года.
А с другой стороны, так никаких скрытых поборов, никаких неловкостей, и нет этого - одни родители подсуетились и к Пасхе, и к Рождеству, а у других и без того голова кругом.

* Книжка, понятно, не достается любимому учителю, а попадает в школьную библиотеку с надписью "в честь такого-то".
