Scientists have created a synthetic cell that can survive and reproduce itself according to an artificial DNA sequence, promising designer genomes with which researchers can produce sophisticated artificial organisms.
To prove the genome is synthetic and to assert their ownership, the scientists even "watermarked" it by forming encoded words with the alphabet of genes and proteins. The watermarks included whole phrases. Among them were quotations from author James Joyce, Nobel-winning physicist Richard Feynman and a quote from American Prometheus, a biography of the father of the atom bomb J Robert Oppenheimer. "


Scientists from the J. Craig Venter Institute have produced a living cell powered by manmade DNA, creating what they call the world's first synthetic cell. Lead researcher Craig Venter talks about what this milestone means.
