Из H-ANTISEMITISM In a message dated 11/20/03 2:54:53 PM, Albrecht Kolthoff writes: << My question to this list: have there been similar surveys in other countries asking about the population percentage of Jews? >> I cannot answer Albrecht Kolthoff's question - hope that another list member may do so. However, having lived in Germany before (Jewish pop.ca. 500,000), during and after the Third Reich, having lived there again in the 1960s, and visiting there at least once a year since the 1980s - I want to point out one important difference: The pre-WWII Jewish population in Germany differed vastly from the current Jewish population in Germany. The previous (and almost totally extinct) Jewish population in Germany was totally assimilated, intermarried with non Jews to a large degree. We were almost indistinguishable from our 'Aryan' neighbors, in-laws, erstwhile friends; hence the introduction of the Yellow Star was imperative. The current Jewish population in Germany is clearly distinguishable -externally- and, given the past history and the many justified accusations, memorial sites, literary output about the Holocaust experience, the general perceptions outlined by the poll which Albrecht Kolthoff cites, the non-Jewish population in Germany feels pressured and threatened. Anyone who has taken Psychology 101 can draw some important conclusions. Charlotte Opfermann. |
