I write this email with some trepidation. I am a psychotherapist as well as an historian. I have a Jewish patient who is struggling with his degree of orthodoxy and suffers severe guilt feelings for masturbating. It is clear that orthodox Judaism is very censorious about masturbation. On the other hand, most people do masturbate. According to Kinsey 95%+ do. I wonder if the religious prohibition means that Jews masturbate less (or more...) than followers of other faiths. I have spent quite a lot of time on the web trying to find data about this matter. Can anyone help me? I would like to be able to say that notwithstanding the stern prohibition, x% of Jews do, nevertheless, masturbate.
