Hey everyone, I've been working on this huge project called history uncovered. The plan is to basically turn this into the biggest Finnish history archive on Google Earth.

Right now, I’m tracking the whole rail network from the 1920s to today. Uusimaa is 99% finished and Southern Finland is at about 30%. Since it’s summer break, I’m gonna be updating this pretty frequently. I'm also planning to expand this way past just trains later on—abandoned airports and other infrastructure are coming next.

The Timeline Legend:

  • ???? White: Active lines/tracks still physically there today.
  • ???? Blue: Modern abandonments (2000 – Present).
  • ♥️ Red: Late 20th-century abandonments (1950 – 1999).
  • ???? Purple: Deep history lines (1920 – 1949) — these archives were annoying asf to find.
  • ???? Yellow: Uncertain/speculative lines I'm still verifying.
  • ???? Green: My own hypothetical/fantasy rail expansion concepts.
  • ???? Black: Local racing circuits added as a side thing.

A few quick things before you check it out:

  • Rural Accuracy: It's tight in cities, but expect a ~10-meter margin of error in the countryside. Nature has completely reclaimed a lot of the old 1900s embankments, so the line might be a bit off the rail in rural areas.
  • Lag: There are over 1,000 hand-drawn segments. If your phone or browser stutters, just turn off the "3D Buildings" layer in your Google Earth settings and it'll run way better.

If I got something wrong, or if you have any info, old maps, or archives that could help me out, definitely hit me up! Let me know what you guys think.
