Global Suicide Rates by Countries, WHO Estimates
Global Suicide Rates by Countries, WHO Estimates

This map shows the estimated age-standardized suicide rate per 100,000 people by country in 2021, based primarily on World Health Organization (WHO) estimates.

The rates are age-standardized to allow fair comparisons between countries with different age structures. In many parts of the world, however, suicide is believed to be underreported due to social stigma, cultural and religious factors, legal consequences, and differences in death registration systems. As a result, the reported figures may underestimate the true burden in some countries.

Note: Some countries and territories with populations under 100,000 may appear to have unusually high rates because a small number of cases can significantly affect the per-capita statistics.

Why are there two maps?

Both maps are based on the same WHO 2021 age-standardized suicide estimates, but they were created by different organizations. The red map groups countries into fixed rate categories (e.g., 0-5, 5-10, 10-15), while the blue map uses a continuous color gradient to represent the same underlying data. As a result, some countries may appear lighter or darker between the two maps, even though they are illustrating the same WHO estimates using different visual styles and legends.
