[Botany • 2022] Zingiber procumbens (Zingiberaceae) • A New Species of Zingiber (Subgenus Cryptanthium) from Kayah State [Taxonomic Studies on Zingiberaceae of Myanmar IV]
Abstract A new species, Zingiber procumbens Nob.Tanaka & M.M.Aung (Zingiberaceae), from Kayah State, eastern Myanmar, is described with color plates. Zingiber procumbens is assignable to section Cryptanthium Horan. based on lateral inflorescences on the procumbent peduncles. This species is similar to Z. bradleyanum Craib in vegetative characters, but well distinguished from it by a combination of long bilobed ligules, lamina with silvery line, procumbent peduncle, tubular bracts with dark reddish stripes, and flowers with purple orbicular labellum. Detailed descriptions, color plates and preliminary IUCN assessments are provided. Keywords: Burma, ginger, Karen Hills, new taxon, Zingiber procumbens.
Zingiber procumbens Nob.Tanaka & M.M.Aung, sp. nov. (sect. Cryptanthium) Diagnosis:— Zingiber procumbens is similar to Z. bradleyanum in having long bilobed and twisted ligules unattached to leafy stem, and lamina with silvery line along the mid-vein, but differs from it in having remarkably longer procumbent peduncle, the tubular bracts with dark reddish stripes and purple orbicular labellum.
