What are pingbacks?

Pingbacks are a way to keep track of links and references to your public entries.
It is a system of automatic notification between websites that support the pingback protocol. Pingback helps LiveJournal users know who is linking to their public entries.

When you are subscribed to receive pingback notifications, LiveJournal alerts you when an LJ user publishes a link to your entry.
External pingbacks are not supported at this time.
Notifications are sent in the form of comments from pingback_bot. Pingback notifications include the name and URL of the page that is linking to your entry as well as a brief quote from the text where your entry is linked. These pingback comments are subject to the same rules as all other comments; if, for example, you only allow your Friends to comment, you won't receive pingbacks unless you add [info]pingback_bot as a Friend. Pingback comments to your journal will be left as screened comments. Please note that pingbacks only work for public entries. Friends-Only or Private entries cannot receive pingbacks.

You can manage your preferences for this setting under the Privacy tab on the My Account Settings page. There are two options:

* Open: You can choose to be notified when other LiveJournal users link to your entries.
* Disabled: You can choose to receive no notifications at all.

The setting you choose under the Privacy tab is the default setting for all your future entries. This setting may be overridden on a per-post basis via the additional settings on the Post an Entry page.

The pingback system is mutual; when you choose to receive pingbacks, you are also choosing to send pingbacks to others when you link to their content.

Pingbacks don't appear immediately. There can be a delay of up to 15 minutes after an entry is created before the pingback arrives.

Pingbacks appear as screened comments and need to be unscreened before they are visible to anybody other than the journal owner.
