If you consider contemporary Western anxieties about their local governments - mismanagement, unemployment, lack of political will to provide public housing, lack of investment in public infrastructure - Singapore is great. If you consider past Western anxieties about local governance - crime, urban slums, ethnic instability, countercultural protest - Singapore looks like a parodic dystopia, of a city that has solved these problems in entirely the wrong way. Singapore ticks on by its own domestic concerns, but whether fashionable Western intellectuals like it depends on whether said intellectual class are engaging in white flight or gentrification back in their own countries.
