The original Right in France was formed as a reaction
against the "Left" and comprised those politicians
supporting hierarchy, tradition, and clericalism.
Those who sat on the left generally opposed the monarchy
and supported the revolution, including the creation of a
republic and secularization,[5] while those on the right
were supportive of the traditional institutions of the Old
Regime. Generally, the left-wing is characterized by an
emphasis on "ideas such as freedom, equality, fraternity,
rights, progress, reform and internationalism" while the
right-wing is characterized by an emphasis on "notions
such as authority, hierarchy, order, duty, tradition,
reaction and nationalism".
