UNOSAT - FAO Gaza Strip Cropland Damage Assessment - June 2024

https://reliefweb.int/map/occupied-palestinian-territory/unosat-fao-gaza-strip-cropland-damage-assessment-june-2024

This map illustrates satellite-detected changes in cropland areas of the Gaza Strip resulting from the decline in the health and density of crops due to the ongoing conflict. UNOSAT conducted an analysis utilising satellite imagery collected by the Sentinel-2 satellite between June 2017 and 2024, performing a Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) analysis as well as a multitemporal classification to identify notable changes taking place in cropland areas during that timeframe. The methodology evaluated the damage as a substantial decline in the health and density of crops in June 2024, in comparison to the preceding seven seasons spanning from 2017 to 2024. The decline in the health and density of the crops can be observed due to the impact of activities such as razing, heavy vehicle activity, bombing, shelling, and other conflict-related dynamics. The analysis includes damage assessment for orchards and other trees, field crops and vegetables.

UNOSAT analysis shows that the cropland extent in the Gaza Strip is estimated to be 150 sq. km, accounting for approximately 41% of the total area of the Gaza Strip, following an extensive land-cover analysis. Compared to the average of the previous seven years, approximately 63% of the permanent crop fields in the Gaza Strip exhibited a significant decline in health and density in June 2024. In a comprehensive evaluation, it was found that there has been a 9% increase in the proportion of cropland that has been damaged since the previous analysis conducted in May 2024. Additionally, the analysis indicates a notable rise in the destruction of the orchards and other trees, field crops and vegetables in the Deir Al-Balah Governorate, with a 7-percentage point increase compared to the previous May 2024 analysis. Moreover, there has been a significant escalation in the destruction of cropland within the Gaza Governorate, with the percentage rising from 61% in May 2024 to 69% in June 2024. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field.

Gaza Strip in maps: How life has changed

-----

People in Gaza are facing desperate living conditions and food shortages as the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues.

Almost two million people - most of the population - are reported to have fled their homes and those who remain in northern Gaza are on the brink of famine, according to the United Nations.

The Strip has been under the control of Hamas since 2007 and Israel says it is trying to destroy the military and governing capabilities of the Islamist group, which is committed to the destruction of Israel.

Much of the small enclave of Gaza, only 41km (25 miles) long and 10km wide, bounded by the Mediterranean Sea on one side and fenced off from Israel and Egypt at its borders - has become uninhabitable.

And people are starving. Half the population is struggling with catastrophic hunger and famine is imminent in northern parts of Gaza, according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), the global body responsible for declaring famine.

Save the Children says families are struggling to find enough food and water and children are dying because of malnutrition and disease.

Even before the current conflict, about 80% of the population of Gaza was in need of humanitarian aid. Aid deliveries halted at the start of the latest conflict have resumed, but at much lower levels - with about 164 aid lorries a day crossing into southern Gaza from Egypt.

The World Food Programme says that addressing the simple food needs would require at least 300 trucks a day to enter Gaza and distribute food.

Agencies say distribution is hampered by the lack of infrastructure as the area endures intense bombardment, movement restrictions, interrupted communications and fuel shortages.

There have also been reports of crowds looting aid lorries.

The desperate food situation comes after six months of conflict.

Having cut Gaza in two, the Israelis pushed further into Gaza City, where they faced resistance from Hamas. While Israeli forces have since conducted ground operations across much of northern Gaza, there are still clashes in some areas, according to analysts from the Institute for the Study of War.

Whole districts in Gaza City have been razed to the ground and swathes of agricultural land and greenhouse areas have been returned to sand under the tracks of heavy vehicles and tanks as part of clearing operations by Israeli troops.
