INTERNET: Chat Almost Cost Scientist His Job
The New York Times reports that an expatriate Russian scientist who
made remarks about the Holocaust in an Internet chat room nearly lost
his government health post and was almost deported back to Russia —
all as a result of an alleged online remark he claims he never made.
The New York Times says that in 1994 an allusion Dmitry Pruss made on
Usenet to the Holocaust was taken out of its original context and
reposted in a vicious note sent to hundreds of newsgroups, including
Jewish-themed ones. The sender, referring to Pruss (who is Jewish),
wrote: "As a religious Jew I am OUTRAGED that my tax money is used to
pay for Internet access for the notorious Jew-hating Russian punk."
Pruss was ordered to have psychiatric counselling by his employers,
but kept his job.

Прусс рассказывал про еврейских ветеранов в Эстонии, которым
не нравится, что на памятниках еврейским ветеранам убирают
русские надписи, а добавляют иврит; его однокурсник,
эстонец, ответил, что странные люди евреи, все-то
им не нравится; Прусс сказал, недаром евреев столько
много раз пытались уничтожить.
