Сегодня день победы турок над греками. В связи с чем город полностью вымер. Даже места для парковки кое-где появились.

Turkey celebrates Victory Day
Tuesday, August 30, 2005

ANKARA - Turkish Daily News

The 83rd anniversary of the landmark victory of the Turkish military led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk over an invading Greek army will be celebrated nationwide today.

The first official ceremony will take place at Atatürk's mausoleum in Ankara, where top military commanders led by Chief of General Staff Gen. Hilmi Özkök will lay a wreath at Atatürk's tomb. All across the nation, military and civilian officials will lay wreaths at Atatürk statues.

Özkök will later travel to the Atatürk Culture Center to watch an official ceremony that will start at 11:00 a.m. together with President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, Parliament Speaker Bülent Arınç, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and other top state officials. Official ceremonies will end with Özkök hosting a victory reception in the evening.

Sezer: Protection of republic of paramount importance:

President Ahmet Necdet Sezer said on Monday that everyone should fulfill their responsibilities of protecting the unitary structure of the republic and Ataturk's principles and reforms.

He said protection of the republic and the values it represents was everybody's duty to the martyrs who died defending the independence of the nation.

He said the nation had risen up after World War I, under Atatürk's leadership, against the allied forces that tried to enslave the Turks and that the War of Independence reached its successful conclusion after the victory on Aug. 30, 1922.

Sezer said the nation demonstrated its will to live in independence with the Aug. 30 victory and its will to live in modernity by establishing a republic. The principles of the republic are the basis of the Constitution and have been protected by the nation since its founding, said Sezer.

‘Independent Turkey remembers the fallen with gratitude':

Parliament Speaker Bülent Arınç said on Monday that today's independent Republic of Turkey remembers the fallen with gratitude, adding that the entire nation is one in celebrating the 83rd anniversary of the victory.

He said Aug. 30 represented an achievement in which the Turks demonstrated exceptional courage and patriotism and delivered independence to a country living under occupation.

PM vows to follow Atatürk's path:

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Monday that Turkey would continue to follow Atatürk's path to modernity, while protecting the republic.

He congratulated the nation and the military's Victory Day, saying that Turkey's War of Independence was crowned and that the Turkish will to live in independence was shown to the world on Aug. 30, 1922.

Erdoğan said the strength and achievements of the forefathers would continue to guide the nation.

Özkök calls for strict observance of Constitution:

Chief of General Staff Gen. Özkök said over the weekend that a solution that would ensure social cohesion and peace was closely linked to the strict observance of unalterable constitutional articles.

Speaking to military officers at a ceremony honoring Victory Day, Özkök said: “One must note that once the rot sets in, it is very hard to stop its spread. We see any deviation from these constitutional principles as rotting. I would like to note the importance of Kemalism in protecting the country against this deviation.”

He said the military sees the European Union as a tool that can be utilized to expand on Atatürk's goal of modernity.

He also said the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) would continue to modernize itself and adapt to change in order to serve the nation in the best way possible.

‘No one can threaten our territorial integrity':

Opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal warned against anyone trying to interfere with Turkey's national integrity. “Our determination to protect ourselves is in accordance with the rule of law, human rights, democracy and modernity,” said the CHP leader.

In a statement Baykal said Aug. 30 represented the nation's willingness to die rather than live under domination. He said everyone's duty was to protect the heritage and sacrifices of the fallen while protecting the nation's independence, secularism and democracy.
