When the sailors on the British Navy ship H.M.S. Poole spotted a French pirate vessel off the Cape Verde islands in July 1700, they chased it into a cove only for the pirates’ leader, Emanuel Wynn, to escape. The skirmish was recorded by the Poole’s captain, John Cranby, who included a description of the “cross bones, a death’s head and an hour glass” on Wynn’s flag.
