From Bruce Ross' introduction to "Haiku Moment": ...like a good Shintoist, he (Issa) is sympathetic toward the spirit or kami in natural beings. In Issa's haiku, the non-human beings display human emotions... Issa personalized nature. Issa's attention toward nature is based on his impassioned sense of his brotherhood with all living things.
Note: He didn't need neither metaphors nor personifications, it was, and still is a part of the culture. Outside of it, or when you deal with non-living(?) objects, e.g. computers, cars, etc..., you have to really work to achieve the same result.
