the good news is in march i'm going to Hannover for CEBit and a couple of workshop-seminars. the bad news is the holiday break was really bad for my ping-pong game. the ugly news is i'm travelling to dallas next week and it's going to get even worse. :(( |

Horrific venereal disease strikes African baboons - And the top story of the year for readers suggests that diseases of the reproductive organs are an extremely popular topic. It disclosed details of a mysterious and horrific venereal disease spreading among east African baboons. The consequences for male baboons are particularly gruesome, according to Elibariki Mtui, of the African Wildlife Foundation in Arusha, Tanzania. He told New Scientist: "The genitals kind of rot away, then they just drop off."
4. World's first brain prosthesis revealed - The fourth most popular news article published this year revealed an extraordinary solution to treating brain damage. Researchers at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles developed the first brain prosthesis designed to replace the hippocampus - part of the brain used to store memories. The ethical implications of replacing part of the brain were not lost on scientists. But Joel Anderson, an ethicist at Washington University in St Louis pointed out: "Initially people thought heart transplants were an abomination because they assumed that having the heart you were born with was an important part of who you are." |
