Gaki [Jun. 4th, 2004|10:39 pm]
From the "Japanese Death Poems written by Zen Monks and Haiku Poets on the Verge of Death"

a haiku by Gaki (Akutagawa Ryunosuke, died on July 24, 1927 at the age of thirty six)

"laughing at myself" /Mizubana ya hana no saki dake kure nokoru/

One spot alone
left glowing in the dark:
my snotty nose

He gave the poem to his aunt on the night of July twenty third and asked her to deliver it the next morning to the family doctor, who was himself a haiku poet. The same night Akutagawa killed himself by drinking poison.
