Science: Neurobiology. [Jul. 8th, 2004|04:11 pm]
Brain implants 'read' monkey minds
Brain implants have been used to "read the minds" of monkeys to predict what they are about to do and even how enthusiastic they are about doing it.

It is the first time such high level cognitive brain signals have been decoded and could ultimately lead to more natural thought-activated prosthetic devices for people with paralysis, says Richard Andersen project leader at the California Institute of Technology, in Pasadena, US.

Medicine. Polio vaccine with a cancer causing virus [Jul. 8th, 2004|04:15 pm]
Vaccine scandal revives cancer fear
Many millions more people than previously thought might have been given polio vaccine contaminated with a monkey virus linked to cancer.

Now Michele Carbone of Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago has announced results that suggest the Soviet polio vaccine was contaminated after 1963, possibly until the early 1980s. "Is there infectious virus? The short answer is, yes," Carbone told the Vaccine Cell Substrate Conference 2004 in Rockville, Maryland, last week.

The vaccine was almost certainly used throughout the Soviet bloc and probably exported to China, Japan and several countries in Africa. That means hundreds of millions could have been exposed to SV40 after 1963.

Nanotechnology. Controllable nano-diode tube. [Jul. 8th, 2004|04:21 pm]
Controllable nano-diode created
The most efficient diode ever made using carbon nanotubes has been unveiled, marking another step towards practical atomic electronics.

Carbon nanotubes - structures resembling rolled up cages made from interlinking carbon atoms - are extremely strong and are very good conductors of electricity.

Robotics. Shape-memory wheels (spokes). [Jul. 8th, 2004|04:25 pm]
Robotic wheels that just keep rolling
The wheel-shaped robots, which are just 4 centimetres in diameter and 1 centimetre thick, were built by Shinichi Hirai and Yuuta Sugiyama at Ritsumeikan University in Kusatsu. The robots propel themselves along by continuously altering their shape.

The rim of the wheel is made of an elastic polymer, while the spokes are made of a smart material known as a shape memory alloy, which becomes shorter when heated.

Почти год назад обещал Марине Хаген [info]golda@lj найти фото своего кота Васьки, пьющего из бассейна.

Резкость, правда, отвратительная, но как документ истории пойдет :)

Exploring the depths of the internet senryu tradition I found an article by Paul H. Henry of Seattle Washington entitled "A CALL FOR THE COMPLETE ELIMINATION OF JOKE HAIKU PRODUCTION ON THE INTERNET".

There, amongst other highly remarkable passages, you can find a direct challenge to the international haiku community:

"Any moderately intelligent person could easily toss off several joke haiku a minute, and they'd all be neither better nor worse than the average specimens on the Internet. Limericks, however, require that attention be paid to meter and that acceptable rhyming words be found. Whereas the ability to write a "good" joke haiku only marks one as not being in a coma, the ability to write a good limerick sets one apart as a creative force."

So, I've decided to wholeheartedly support his call, and replace the sex diet senryu with a limerick of my own:

For a lady that wants to be proud

Better diet can hardly be found:

Let's have sex every day,

Never tell me, "Oh, nay!",

And you'll be beauty queen all-around.
