Во времени есть, как минимум, два потока.
Первый - обычный ветер первородной катастрофы, шторм истории - время, текущее вперёд.
There is a painting by Klee called Angelus Novus. It shows an angel who seems about to move away from something he stares at. His eyes are wide, his mouth is open, his wings are spread. This is how the angel of history must look. His face is turned toward the past. Where a chain of events appears before us, he sees on single catastrophe, which keeps piling wreckage upon wreckage and hurls it at his feet. The angel would like to stay, awaken the dead, and make whole what has been smashed. But a storm is blowing from Paradise and has got caught in his wings; it is so strong that the angel can no longer close them. This storm drives him irresistibly into the future to which his back is turned, while the pile of debris before him grows toward the sky. What we call progress is this storm.
Второй - река зла, берущая начало в наших смертях и ниспадающая водопадом на прозрачные камни Рая - время, текущее назад.
Действие первого потока очевидно.
Дейстиве второго проявляется, например, так: кошка - домашняя любимица - вонзает когти в глаза ребёнку; она видит вперёд. Или: черная змея, впившаяся в язык путника, которого повстречал Заратустра.
Про это у Юнга в "Красной Книге":
He who still has his life before him is a child.
He who lives life in the present is developed.
If you thus live all that you can live, you are developed.
He who is a child in this time, his God dies.
He who is developed in this time, his God continues to live.
The spirit of the depths teaches this mystery.

What is better, that man has life ahead of him, or that God does?
I know no answer. Live; the unavoidable decides.
Соответственно, каждому из действий времени можно приписать своё апокалиптическое ожидание.
Первому - возвращение к традиции, молодому Богу, остановка истории и кристаллизация сознания. "Красота Евы по отношению к красоте Сары - как красота прекраснейшей из сегодняшних женщин по отношению к обезьяней морде. То же верно, если сравнить Сару и прекраснейшую из сегодняшних женщин."
Второму - преодоление встречного потока, выход за исток нашей смерти к смерти Бога, к Сверхчеловеку и звёздам. А у Евы, соответственно, просто было недостаточно конечностей.
P.S.
термин "река зла" не очень удачный - Берроуз цитирует, по-видимому, Верлена, говоря "My past was an Evil River". У Верлена река в другую сторону течет:
Même, — et pour tenir abaissé
L’orgueil, qui fit son âme veuve,
Il remontera le passé,
Ce passé, comme un mauvais fleuve!
или в русском переводе:
И чтобы спуску не давать
Опустошающей гордыне,
