Russian culture was always homosexuality-based. Or at least for a century already. Prison and army are more simple and explicit mirrors of the society where those values and relations are demonstrated literally.

It's indeed a riddle why active homosexuals do not recognize themselves as homosexuals. But that's all they are and they are all, - noted in prison by Shalamov first, perhaps.
