Eyeballs & plague Very interesting. There is one thing, however, that bothers me: the eyeballs on a platter. Plague victims had two patron saints: St. Sebastian and St. Roche. Traditionally, St. Roche was given gifts in the shape of the organs that the saint healed. For example, eyeballs. I've seen such offerings myself, e.g. http://www.frommers.com/destinations/ne I wonder if it is really St. Lucy with that plate (suggestive as that is). Maybe it is one of the offerings to St. Roche, which makes a lot of sense in the time of a plague. The painter was clearly obsessed with the pestilence and Sebastian symbolism (which is not strange given the time). Maybe the eyeballs are just part of the same thing. What do you think?
