In an interview with Please Kill Me, you said that underground comics were influential because “people needed truth.” There were “inquiring minds.” If you were to unload a dose of truth on inquiring minds of the contemporary moment, what would that look like?

RT: I’m not sure that at this stage it is possible to unload “truth” or much else to a non-sentient being without using a 12 volt battery and jumper cables. The 8 billion of us have lost our way, eaten our seed corn and plundered the stocks of our neighbors who don’t even have seed corn. It is a mess. A mess the sci fi writers have been warning us about for a few hundred years. The best we can do is educate the youth and curb population growth drastically, for starters.

Some Gentlemen drug dealers had given money to the bookstore in the Ecology Center.
they only wanted 10 copies
so I took 19900 copies back to my garage and tried to figure out how to sell them and repay the Gentlemen drug dealers.

Tara McGinley.
https://dangerousminds.net/comments/meet_the_wild_child_tiger_woman_who_tried_to_kill_aleister_crowley

“There was a standard question you could use to open a conversation with the troops, and Fouhy tried it. ‘How long you been in-country?’ he asked.
The Kid half lifted his head; that question could not be serious. The weight was really on him, and the words came slowly.
‘All fuckin’ day,’ he said.”

"There was a black grunt with the 9th Division who called himself the Entertainer. When I asked him why he said, " 'Cause I rock and I roll," and flipped the selector switch on his 16 back and forth between semi and full. He walked away, moving almost in two sections like his ass was stalking his chest, so that his dog tags flopped hard against him. He spun on his heel and did it backward for a few yards. Then he stopped and reached over his head. When he pulled his arm down a heavy rain came pouring in. "I been here so long I can call these motherfuckers in on the dime."

The study of ecology in Slow Death Funnies number one was published forty five years ago. Then Leonard Rifas started a great line of eco-comics called educomics, then Larry Gonick began his cartoon history of the universe that led to cartoon guides to statistic, physics, etc. All the titles mentioned have been used in college (Stanford,Harvard, etc) and highschool courses, and like art spiegelman's Maus, have won wide recognition and acclaim and now we get a classic "We are Columbia and Microsoft, we know who started the world" rant. ugh.

the man who printed the first Zap comic with Don Donahue in 1967 at 2180 Bryant st. SF where Last Gasp moved to in late 74: Charley Plymel, one of the early Beat Poets, thus bridging the gap between the Beat movement and the underground comix movement. There should be a plaque denoting the historic significance. Psychedelic poster writing also began there as Frank Westlake's Bindweed Press printed the early rock posters and the artists got into his collection of 16th century wooden Dutch type, while taking acid and playing his organ.

MLN: Of course, it never stops. And then my final question is that, do you think that a counter culture actually exists?

AP: Okay, well it's not the same idea as before, I don't think. So I know what John Waters told me, in answer to that question. He says, "everything is culture. Werner Herzog, that's who said this, not John Waters. So I was having dinner with Werner Herzog and Crispin Glover at some place in Malibu Canyon, LA, where they serve game-type dinners. And so, I don't know how the topic came up, but that's what he said. He was very adamant about it. There's no such thing as counterculture. It's all part of the culture.

ron: "my dad became a country and western radio personality in Bakersfield, went by the name of Tumbleweed Turner. When I would go on the show with him, my moniker was Sagebrush, son of Tumbleweed. He had a four hour show called Kern Kounty Kountry Time on KPMC. His theme music was Drifting along with the tumbling tumbleweeds. I gave him his name, recalling our decades of the movie biz, where I often had to chop tumbleweeds off the back rows of our drive in movie theaters."

[Dec. 13th, 2015|09:32 pm]
“When you have sex in your drawings, like in the bus story, it is usually from behind,” I observed. “But we never see if it’s anal sex or vaginal.”

“I’ve never been asked that before,” Mr. Crumb said. “It’s vaginal, although the act of penetration itself is not the main event for me. It’s the psychological stuff around it, what’s called ‘foreplay,’ I guess you might say. That’s where the big thrills are for me. Intercourse for me is just, you know, the icing on the cake, or something. These things are hard to talk about. Anyway, it’s all in the comics.”

“What is your favorite sexual position?” I asked him.
“I dunno… Is that something I really have to…? I can’t really talk about it. I can draw it in my comics, but I can’t actually talk about it… It’s embarrassing. Then how was I able to draw it for all the world to see, you might ask? I don’t know the answer. I like to be sucked while I’m sitting on a chair with the woman kneeling, all spread out sprawling so I can slap her big ass,” he said. “A big ass is just heaven. Like two giant basketballs.”

“He never had sex. He liked young boys. That’s an American thing—that extreme isolation, alienation, loneliness.” Mr. Crumb observed.

“Yes, but we took a lot of flack for that, people were saying that she was riding my coattails. People are just awful. I hate everybody equally, I don’t discriminate,” he said.

[Dec. 12th, 2015|09:52 pm]
Adam Parfrey
One of my first jobs was to typeset and do layout for a small publishing company. They had a huge Compugraphic typesetting machine that spit out rolls of text on paper, which you later had to wax down on boards. You had to go to another facility that provided you halftones on paper to be able to use photographs in a book. The first book I published (with Amok Press) was a novel written Joseph Goebbels and translated into English. It surprisingly received a favorable review from the New York Times. Publishing at that time was a real operation which made you focus your time and energy and knowhow. I had no money but I got it done.

In '88 I used a software called JusText, which employed CompuGraphic typesetting numbers to format the text as if it was the old time big machine, for the initial Feral House releases. But you had to have an Apple Macintosh, which was three thousand dollars at that time, and a struggle for me to obtain. It was not easy but you find a way to do it.

The Amazon overlords make it super easy for anyone to put out anything at all, any ideas that are not of any particular interest. I think that some degree of hardship in any particular process focuses one's thoughts and intentions. But my goodness, FREEDOM means the ability not to think or consider, and to have the ability to swim in shit.

But still we think of the internet like this new kind Wild West place, and things are not in chains yet, so we don’t care because everything will be OK anyhow.
