таксы - это по сути разновидность гончих, которые специализируются на норных животных. по некоторым классификациям их выделяют в отдельную группу, по некоторым относят к гончим породам.

Ну это странно, что таксы - разновидность гончих, у них же лапки коротенькие. Поэтому я буду думать что правильнее перевести "гончая".

There are three types of hound, with several breeds within each type:
Sighthounds (also called gazehounds), which follow prey predominantly by speed, keeping it in sight. These dogs are fast and assist hunters in catching game—fox, hare, deer and elk.
Scenthounds, which follow prey or others (like missing people) by tracking its scent. These dogs have endurance but are not fast runners.
The remaining breeds of hound follow their prey using both sight and scent; they are difficult to classify as they are neither sighthound nor scent hound.

While classified in the hound group or scent hound group in the United States and Great Britain, the breed actually has its own group in the countries which belong to the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (World Canine Federation).[5] Many dachshunds, especially the wire-haired subtype, may exhibit behavior and appearance that are similar to that of the terrier group of dogs.[6] An argument can be made for the scent (or hound) group classification because the breed was developed to use scent to trail and hunt animals, and probably descended from the Saint Hubert Hound like many modern scent hound breed such as bloodhounds and Basset Hounds; but with the persistent personality and love for digging that probably developed from the terrier, it can also be argued that they could belong in the terrier, or "earth dog", group.[6]
