Это похоже очень плохо.
Все понимают, что главная, а пожалуй и единственная причина - финансовый кризис MIT.
Но Вест то тут причем? Жалко. Он был очень хорошим президентом.

To Members of the Faculty and Staff:

Dear Colleagues,

This morning at the Corporation meeting I announced my intent to step
down as MIT's president by the beginning of the 2004 fall term or when
my successor is appointed.

In my view, the invitation to this position in 1990 was a call to
national service, and I have approached it in that manner to the best of
my abilities. After almost 14 years of working with you, I am ready to
spend a little time reflecting, writing, and considering what I can most
productively do next. More time with Becky, our children and
grandchildren is very much in the picture.

This is a move that I have been considering for some time, and I believe
that MIT will benefit from the renewal that comes with selecting a new
president and developing the next stage of its vision and programs. The
time to begin this transition is right, now that the strategy and
planning are in place to see MIT safely through the near-term financial
pressures that we, along with the rest of higher education, face in the
coming year. I am confident that as a team, we have set the right
course and established its implementation.

Together, we have maintained and enhanced MIT's excellence and our
national and international leadership, stature and service. The MIT
faculty and staff have accomplished an astounding agenda in research,
education, campus transformation, student life, diversity, and national
policy and affairs. But the beauty of a great university is that our
work is never done. Our agenda must evolve to shape the future, and to
respond to new challenges and opportunities. Every accomplishment is
but a way station along the path toward what Vannevar Bush famously
termed "the endless frontier."

Becky and I are privileged beyond measure to live and work at MIT- an
extraordinary community comprised of distinguished faculty who blaze new
trails of knowledge, Nobel laureates, dedicated teachers, the people who
create and maintain our facilities, those who do the administrative work
that makes it possible for our faculty and students to realize their
dreams, those who look after our safety and health, and above all the
wonderful young men and women who study here.

There is a lot to do over the coming months, and I look forward to doing
it with you.

Sincerely,

Chuck Vest

he's the freshman who got drunk at the frat party in 1998 and died. HIs parents sued MIT, arguing that "MIT had responsibility to oversee the students -- in loco parentis " COmplete bull, I think, especially since nobody forced the guy to drink. Yes, it was a frat party, and yes, alcohol was available (and he was a minor -- just think!), but nobody made him drink and nobody would've even made fun of him if he didn't.

Anyway, eventually MIT settled the lawsuit and paid parents $3mil. There's also that tiny detail of parents being so strict that, while Kruger lived with them, he wasn't allowed so much as to smell alcohol, much less to taste it. So when he finally got to the place where he could drink, he went nuts.

Да, занятная история... Не знаю что им руководило. Может то, что суды как правило предвзяты к крупным компаниям в такого рода делах. Может возиться не захотели. Реально ведь 3 миллиона для MIT - ничто, а люди все же ребенка потеряли.

дa, и еще не хотелось всего того журнaлисткого циркa, который вокруг MIT рaзводился (что не день, Boston Globe писaлa стaтьи о том, кaк в MIT прям все поголовно мрут, aдминистрaция не тудa смотрит, студенты водку нa лекциях пьют и с крыш прыгaют и т.д.). So maybe they did the right thing PR-wise.

Sadly, it cost them some when parents of another student (Liz Shin), who commited suicide, brought a similar lawsuit. This time I really hope they don't settle (it's still going on) because it will be vile to let those people profit for something like that [besides suing MIT, they had the audacity to sue the police department for "not sufficient response" -- that's after several policemen were injured, and one severely burned when he was dragging Liz out of her room].

Ага, это я знаю. Но тут вроде позиция у MIT довольно жесткая. Еще один суицид вроде недавно был. Но вот мои grades матерятся по этому поводу, потому как страховка подорожала из-за improving of the mental help programme.
