Saudade : etymology Saudade etymology From Old Portuguese soidade, soydade, from post-classical Latin solitās, solitātem (“solitude”). The diphthong was altered to -au- influenced by saudar (“to salute”), or perhaps Arabic سوداء (sawdā’, “black bile, melancholy”), cf. Georgian სევდა (sevda, “melancholy”) and Swahili soda (“melancholy”) (both Arabic borrowings). |
