Это один из 8 праздников Колеса года, момент между весенним равноденствием и летним солнцестоянием. С распространением христианства григорианский календарь зафиксировал дату этого солнечного праздника несколькими днями ранее, независимо от продолжительности солнечного дня (христиане празднуют его в ночь перед Первомаем, днем святой Вальпургии Хайденхаймской).
