Петер Вильгельм Ильстед родился в 1861 году на острове Фальстер в Дании. В 1878 году поступил в «Академию изобразительных искусств» Копенгагена.

Известность ему принесли картины с интерьерами, которые во множестве писались художниками Скандинавии. В Дании самыми известными были Carl Holsøe, Peter Ilsted и Vilhelm Hammershøi. Последний женился на сестре Илстеда Иде в сентябре 1891 года. У этих двух художников работы были и похожие и разные одновременно.

В 1892 Петер Илстед женился на Ингеборге Петерсен, и они поселились в большой квартире в старом доме Копенгагена. В этом браке родились три дочери - Камма, Ева и Эллен и сын Йенс.

В 1893 году его пригласили преподавать в ту же самую «Академию изобразительных искусств» Копенгагена, которую он окончил сам. Илстед обучал студентов до 1905 года. С 1913 по 1917 он каждое лето проводил с семьёй в усадьбе «Liselund», где и были написаны большинство его картин с детьми.

Умер в 1933 году в Копенгагене.
