Mélange musicale 1. Bach + Beethoven. Observe that the texture of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" (recording with score) is somewhat similar to that of Bach's Prelude no. 1 from the "Well-Tempered Harpsichord" (recording with score). If we replace Beethoven's key and accompaniment texture by Bach's but keep the melody, we get a curious collage. I started writing it down but got too lazy to finish. Here's an initial fragment: Score is here. Download this if the audio player embedding does not work. 2. Bach + Schubert. Again observe that Bach's chorale prelude "Ich ruf' zu dir" (here's a recording with score) has a similar texture to Schubert's Impromptu Op. 90 no.3 (recording with score). Now, I'm trying to fit Schubert's texture into Bach's harmony and melody (rather than Bach's texture into Schubert). This promises to be more interesting than the Bach/Beethoven collage, because we can use Schubert's compositional devices while not deviating too far from Bach. Here's an initial fragment: Score is here. Download this if the audio player embedding doesn't work. I find it more difficult to finish the Bach/Schubert collage effectively, because Bach's fast harmonic changes in the final passages do not fit very will with Schubert's rather slow-paced texture. |
