A brilliant insight into the psychology of contemporary politics
Scott Alexander (a psychiatrist with left-liberal leanings) explains what really divides the U.S. and unravels what has remained a mystery to me for a long time.

Namely, "Male", "White", "American", "Tolerance", "Minorities" are code-words that can stand for the psychological in-group or out-group, rather than for what these words mean.

Some leftist liberals who expressed regret that Osama bin Laden was killed "because it's sad when any human being dies" have been at the same time overjoyed at the passing of Margaret Thatcher or (the late Supreme Justice) A. Scalia. This is not a perverse immorality specific to leftist liberals, as some would say; this is also not a sophisticated and politically motivated double standard. This is a simple stone-age rule: in-group good, out-group bad; other groups - indifferent.

Quotes:

when an angry white person talks at great length about how much he hates “white dudes”, he is not being humble and self-critical.
...
“Intolerance” is starting to look like another one of those words like “white” and “American”.

He also quotes G.K. Chesterton:

It seems to me that you only pardon the sins that you don’t really think sinful. You only forgive criminals when they commit what you don’t regard as crimes...

I'm going to look for books he published. It's a valuable point of view.
P.S. - Couldn't find any published books by Scott Alexander the psychiatrist. It's his pen name at this blog only.
