Старинные витринные манекены часто делали из воска, причем стремились к впечатлению полной реальности- волосы и даже зубы у них были настоящие. Часто их делали с портретным сходством, а в 20 веке стали копировать внешность популярных актеров и актрис.
На примере манекенов очень четко виден идеал красоты и модные приметы конкретного времени.

Первые модные манекены были в виде небольших кукол, в отсутствии журналов именно по их одежде узнавали о последних модах. Они известны с 14 века, развозились они по всем странам и королевским дворам.

During the 1700s, "fashion dolls" were used to spread the "latest fashion." With its size ranging from 1 inches, to life size, historians agree that the fashion dolls were the progenitor of the modern mannequin. The fashion dolls were originally circulated in France as means of disseminating the latest fashion.
Ranging from 12 inches to life size, they were "stylishly" clothed and exchanged freely by the royals and merchant class.
Documented history suggests that fashion dolls were already around during the 1300s. They were continued to be used in spreading "latest fashion" until the 1700s.

This elegant and beautifully executed wax mannequin head is from the Victorian period. I would date this mannequin as being from about 1860 to 1880.

The wax head has hand rooted hair and hand rooted eyelashes and eyebrows. She has very large brown glass eyes. Her lovely face seems luminous. She appears very lifelike and is life sized.

.Antique Wax doll with spun silk and yarn clothing. Looks to be a ballerina dancer as her shoes looks like ballet slippers and she's dressed in costume. Her head and shoulders are done is wax with her hand painted face.
