Нарды — древняя восточная игра. Родина этой игры неизвестна, но известно, что люди играют в эту игру уже более 5000 лет, чему есть исторические доказательства. Так, самая древняя из досок для игры в нарды была найдена в Малой Азии и датируется около 3000 лет до н. э. Аналог этой игры обнаружен в гробнице фараона Тутанхамона.

В разных странах эта игра называлась по-разному. Иногда это название означало просто «настольная игра», как у испанцев — tablero, итальянцев — tavola reale, турок — tavla; иногда это были собственные названия: греков — διαγραμισμος, французов — trick-track и backgammon — у англичан.

Одна из легенд гласит, что некогда индусы, желая проверить сметливость персов, послали им комплект шахмат, полагая, что те не догадаются, как играть в эту мудрую игру. Однако персидский мудрец Бозоргмехр не только легко справился с этой задачей, но и предложил свою, которую индусы не могли разгадать 12 лет. Бюзюркмехр придумал и послал своим оппонентам новую игру — нарды (нард тахте — битва на деревянной доске).

В Персии, в III тысячелетии до н. э. эта игра имела символическое и мистическое значения. Персидские астрологи с помощью нард предсказывали судьбы владык. Поле для игры уподоблялось небу, движение фишек по кругу символизировало ход звёзд.

В Западной Европе распространение игры связано с возвращением крестоносцев из крестовых походов XII века. Игра стала очень популярной в средневековой Европе и называлась Трик-трак. Это название видимо произошло от звука удара костей о деревянную доску. В то время слово «нарды» употреблялось для обозначения игры королей. Сначала только представители высшей аристократии имели привилегии играть в нарды.

Но вскоре игра стала настолько популярной, что в нее играли все сословия- от аристократии до крестьян.
Играли в нее везде- дома, в салонах, в тавернах и кабачках, и даже в банях.

Картинок с изображением игры в трик-трак сохранилось даже больше, чем игры в шашки и шахматы, по количеству они могут сравниться только с игрой в карты.
