Meerschaum- или французское название этого же вещества- écume-де-Мер, у нас его называют "морская пенка".

По мере использования трубки из морской пенки постепенно меняют цвет, а очень старые получают дополнительные оттенки желтого, оранжевого и красного цветов.
Тонкость работы на некоторых трубках поразительна.

Меершаум или Sepiolite- это мягкий белый минерал,водный силикат магния.
Большинство морской пенки получают главным образом в Турции. Меершаум также обнаружили, хотя и менее обильно, в Греции.

При первом извлечении морской пенки - она мягкая, но затвердевает под воздействием солнечного тепла, или когда сушат в теплом помещении.

Меершаум время от времени использовался в качестве замены для мыльного камня, и как строительный материал, но главное его предназначение- для курительных трубок и мундштуков.
Традиционно центр производства таких вещей был в Вене.
