Тыквер у Бостане The MFA Film Program is pleased to present The Films of Tom Tykwer, Jan. 30 - Feb. 22, including an engagement of his first feature film, Deadly Maria (Jan. 30-Feb. 22), as well as screenings of 2 early shorts: Because (with Run Lola Run on Jan. 31) and Epilogue (with Heaven on Feb. 1). Making his international breakthrough in 1998 with the hit Run Lola Run, German director Tom Tykwer has a trademark flair for vivid details, striking images, and swirling camera movements that make him one of the modern cinema's most dazzling visual stylists. Tom Tykwer will be present for the opening night show of Deadly Maria on Thursday, January 30, at 7:30 pm. All films were produced in Germany and are in German with English subtitles, except as noted. Co-presented by Goethe Institut Inter Nationes, Boston. Deadly Maria Thurs., Jan. 30, at 7:30 pm - Tom Tykwer present Wed., Feb. 5, at 5:45 pm Fri., Feb. 7, at 6 pmSat., Feb 8, at 3:45 pm Sat., Feb. 15, at 4 pm Sat., Feb. 22, at 3:30 Deadly Maria (Die TЖdliche Maria, 1993, 106 min.). Rarely, if ever, screened in the U.S., Tykwer's feature debut was a hit in Germany and deserves cult recognition alongside Beetlejuice, Eraserhead, Blade Runner, and Delicatessen. This expressionistic psychodrama reveals the events that lead an introverted woman to take extreme action against her oppressors. Maria has spent her life being ignored and pushed around by men, dutifully serving her invalid father and cold, emotionally distant husband. But, when she shares glances with her neighbor, a new door finally opens in Maria's life. Tickets are $10, $12 for the Jan. 30 screening with the director present. Run Lola Run Fri., Jan. 31, at 5:30 pm Run Lola Run (Lola Rennt, 1998, 81 min.). A film that sprinkles spine-tingling chills through its entire 81 minutes, Run Lola Run is a highly stylized, intensely satisfying fusion of driving techno music and stunning visuals. Tom Tykwer's hip, German-language thriller is known primarily for its unique structure-part video game, part choose-your-own-adventure-which propels Franka Potente's (The Bourne Identity) feisty yet vulnerable Lola through three versions of a plan to secure an impossible sum of money in the next 20 minutes. Lola's initial idea for getting the money is the same each time, meaning that the viewer thrice watches very similar footage, but it's the small variations that make it newly engaging each time and create a bracing commentary on the interconnectedness of random events. The action is fueled throughout by pumping rave music, much of it composed by Tykwer himself. The resulting package is a thrilling spike of adrenaline executed at a frenetic pace. Preceded by Tykwer's short film Because (1990, 35 min.). Winter Sleepers Fri., Jan. 31, at 7:4! 5 pm Winter Sleepers (WinterschlДfer, 1997, 122 min.). Tykwer's sophomore effort was released a year before Run Lola Run won him international acclaim for its unique look and storytelling methods. The film follows a blizzard-filled winter in the lives of a handful of mountain town denizens: a dashing ski instructor, his receptionist girlfriend, a nurse who is the receptionist's roommate, and a mysterious stranger who takes up with the nurse. Before meeting them, the mysterious stranger unknowingly sets into motion a tragedy that will affect the others' lives by swerving his car into the path of a destitute farmer on an icy mountain road. An interesting contemplation of fate and memory, the film features Tykwer's future trademark camera movements and fusion of haunting techno music. Heaven Sat., Feb. 1, at 1 pm Heaven (Germany/Italy, 2002, 96 min.). Starring Cate Blanchett and Giovanni Ribisi (Saving Private Ryan),! and written by the late master filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski, Heaven is a luminous and haunting love story, layered, in the tradition of Kieslowski, over a probing exploration of the modern world and its moral choices. Philippa (Blanchett), a British teacher living in Turin, Italy, has seen many friends, including her husband, fall victim to drug overdoses. Philippa has repeatedly contacted the police with information about Turin's biggest drug dealer but, complicit in his dealings, they have completely ignored her. So Philippa decides to dole out her own form of justice-setting her off on a journey, aided unexpectedly by a young police officer (Ribisi), that moves through retribution and redemption, innocence and crime, and hope and desire as she goes from a young widow to a fugitive on the run. Preceded by Tykwer's short film Epilog (1992, 15 min.). In English and Italian with English subtitles. The Princess and the Warrior Sat., Feb. 1, at 3:15 pm The Princess and the Warrior (Der Krieger und die Kaiserin , 2000, 135 min.). This mystical modern-day romance starring Franka Potente (Run Lola Run, The Bourne Identity) combines the high-speed thrills and high-concept visuals of Lola with a more ambitious story and more fully developed characters. Potente stars as Sissi, a mental hospital nurse leading an isolated life until fate puts her on a collision course with Bodo, a handsome but troubled smalltime thief. Fleeing a gas station robbery in a spectacular chase scene, Bodo inadvertently causes a truck to barrel into Sissi, then saves her life with a harrowing on the spot tracheotomy before scrambling off. Sissi sets out to find her mysterious savior, but Bodo, still haunted by the specter of his dead wife, rejects her. Destiny brings Sissi and Bodo together again during a daring bank robbery, sending them off on an outlaw-couple adventure until they lay their ghosts to rest. "A dazzling fable of love, destiny, and redemption" (Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times). Tickets are $8 for MFA members, seniors, and students; $9 for general admission (unless otherwise noted).
