It is quite unfortunate and disappointing to see provincialism of this degree from high level mathematicians. Several decades ago, when Erdos' ideas were not yet well known and sufficiently integrated into main stream mathematics, contemptuous views of the type that you expressed in your blog were at least somewhat understandable. But in recent decades, work by Furstenberg, Katznelson, Weiss, Bourgain, Gowers, Tao and many others have demonstrated very clearly not only the depth of Erdos' and Szemeredi's mathematics, but also its connections with many other areas of mathematics. Recent works by Tao, Ziegler, Green and others have also demonstrated powerful connections between these ideas and group/ring theory. The time when a problem was unlikely to be considered interesting unless the statement was three pages long is long gone and it is time for the condescension towards Erdos/Szemeredi mathematics to end.
