On March 19, 2019, the magazine unpublished an interview of philosopher Holly Lawford-Smith. The article expressed the "gender-critical” perspective on transgender issues, leading to accusations of transphobia. Four editorial board members, Eley Williams, David Winters, Hestia Peppe, and Joanna Walsh, resigned. In response to the "depublication" of the interview, the author, philosopher and senior editor Richard Marshall resigned from 3:AM. On March 20, 2019, Andrew Gallix temporarily shut down the website, stating “I don’t know if our publication, after almost 20 years, will survive all this.”
