Molly Nilsson announces new BLM-benefitting re-release of “Hey Moon”
Berlin-based singer-songwriter Molly Nilsson is taking pre-orders on a 7" single re-release of her 2008 song "Hey Moon." All profits will be donated to Black Lives Matter, Nilsson says on the release's Bandcamp page.
"Hey Moon" was covered by John Maus in 2011, and remains one of his best-known tracks. Maus stirred controversy this week when he appeared alongside Ariel Pink at a pro-Trump rally in Washington — the event soon transformed into a riot that left five people dead. Maus has not issued a direct public statement on his presence at the melee.
In her statement announcing the 7", Nilsson seemed to allude to the simmering controversy, saying that the riot and its attendents spurred her decision to re-release the song. "In case anyone was wondering, I'm a lifelong supporter of Antifa. Like most of us, I was appalled by what we saw in DC this week and by the people present there.
"In response to this," she continued, "DSA and Night School Records have decided to release a 7” single of my original song Hey Moon (2008), with ALL PROFITS from the sale donated to BLACK LIVES MATTER worldwide."
The 7" will also include the song "Sugar" as a B-side. Listen below and pre-order here.
