Он ведь и писался не для детей. Как и множество других классических книг, кстати. Это почему-то теперь считается, что их нужно прочесть в детстве, а там и забыть можно.

But I LOVED Huckleberry Finn (and also Tom Sawyer) when I was a kid, and so did all my friends, I think. I never heard of anyone thinking it was boring. But it probably makes a difference to read it in your native language -- it's undoubtedly best in the original, and if that's your native language, you can read it faster and that makes it more exciting. When I read books in Russian, the action is always very slow! I agree that it's absolutely worthwhile to read it again in adulthood -- it's a different book then. I just don't agree that it's not for kids. (Well, I don't know anything about Mark Twain's own intentions, I just think it's also a great children's book.)

p.s. Yakov Georgevich did a much better job than I could have at explaining all that -- so anyone who is feeling embarrassed at not knowing all that history can take comfort that I am feeling embarrassed along with you, and it's 'my history'. | |
