saw the new version of Solaris. it's much closer to the book... the rain ... and the main character looks a lot like Banionis... probably, a tribute to Tarkovsky.
a new wrinkle (i think) - there's an allusion that Solaris may play God in one's life by providing the second chance. the question is: would you take this chance? Same as the original Lem's vision...
action: get the Tarkovsky's Solaris "to compare notes"

I don't think the wrinkle (allusion to God or any higher power who can give a second chance) is new. Tarkovsky had it too - at some point Banionis realizes that his wife is not real and even tries to get rid of her, but eventually accepts her (as a second chance?) and she is the one who has to ask Sartoris(?) to annihilate her. And the last episode - with B.'s father, rain falling through the roof on his shoulder, when B. kneels and grabs his hand - what else is it but acceptance of the second chance?

you are right, i forgot the original :) there was another allusion, but if you are going to watch the new movie, i don't want to spoil it for you. ...and after re-reading your comment, it looks like it was, probably, another tribute to Tarkovsky.

Oh, I'll watch the new movie all right... :-)
It's worth seeing the old one again - I saw your comment in ge_m's LJ - I can't imagine that anyone can beat Tarkovsky's stylistics, associations cascades, etc.

frankly, the new Solaris "performed" below my expectations :) so, if you like Tarkovsky...I hesitate to say, but...I'd rather watch Stalker again :) I don't know how many times I read the book and watched the movie, but everytime I find something interesting. As you said, "...stylistics, associations cascades, etc."
