cameras, disruption, mobile, blogging [Jan. 3rd, 2004|10:21 pm]

The capabilities of consumer digital cameras to capture images are running way ahead of the capabilities of displays to present them. Even HD quality screens will not be able to accommodate more than a couple of mega-pixels without downscaling or croping.
This is a typical product overkill situation structurally described, for example, in "The Innovator's Dilemma" by Clayton Christensen. The camera manufacturers are trying to get to the "paper quality", while the consumers just want to see the images on a [computer] screen. This discrepancy points to a disruption of the traditional capture device market by mobile phone-based cameras, which are about to hit 1MP resolution. If you add some storage, which is already underway for music donwloads, and/or increase the throughput of the network, you get a very neat device ideally suited for many applications, including blogging.
Nokia seems to be in a very good position to benefit from the trend. I wonder if Yahoo is going to get into the multi-media blogging/communications business. Seems very logical, given their customer base and alliances with major service providers.
