monastic life is essentially a lab where live experiments are conducted in order to develop methods of separation between gene-based structures from meme-based ones. environmental(socio-economic) pressure on the former stirs public interest and participation in those experiments.
Eco's The Name of The Rose provides a notion that such labs lost their monopoly on memetic research with the emergence of Universities. The printed press, invented by Gutenberg, finally destroyed it a couple of centuries later. Mendel was probably the last one, who was able to develop something significant under the circumstances.
Also, people's experiences in concentration/labor camps provide a much better guidance on the subject, because of the extremity of the situation. The harsher (wrt to access to resources) the environment , the better one's strategy needs to be in order to survive among other strategies. The ultimate genetic algorithm. |
