Haiku. What is it about this small poem that makes people all over the world want to read and write them? Nick Virgilio, one of America's first major haiku poets, once said in an interview that he wrote haiku "to get in touch with the real."

On Western Haiku, by Cor van den Heuvel.

What American haiku anthologies are more available and popular now? besides Cor van der Heuvel's? The Haiku Handbook by William J. Higginson? Haiku Moment edited by Bruce Ross? Anything else?
(i have no idea of the audience of such books, btw - here in Russia too :)

There's nothing really on the book market right now that would qualify as a contemporary haiku anthology. Most of the haiku people moved away from the printed media to the internet. Ion Codrescu publishes a semi-annual international almanac that contains haiku of its subscribers (self-publish mode).
Take a look at www.simplyhaiku.com and its archives, they usually represent a fairly good cross-section of contemporary haiku/senryu.

so, at last it's no matter for haiku authors whether non-writers read them or not; desirable spirit!

well, haiku in the US is a niche art as well, so it's most likely that other enthusiasts read you poems rather than some random person from the street :)

no problem. I too really like simplyhaiku's design - very simple and accessible.
